RELATIONSHIP REPAIR
Step-by-Step Part 6: "Trust and Recovery"
Both parties must agree upon and work through all seven steps together. Will this process take time? Yes. Issues take time, and big issues require even more time. In the reconciliation process, we aim for clarity and understanding.
Agreement, Correction, Atonement, Forgiveness, and Trustworthy future actions are all part of our seven-step process. Initially, this process may seem to cause more pain because it brings hidden issues into the light. The deeper the wound, the more thorough the cleansing must be to facilitate healthy healing. Patience is essential during this journey.
Keep in mind that you are essentially starting over with a recurring issue. Avoid mixing past experiences with your new beginnings. Set realistic expectations for this fresh start. Starting over means exactly that: beginning refreshed. It's like wiping the slate clean, but remember that the slate will never truly be clear if feelings of blame, resentment, or recrimination linger in the background.
Be honest and mature in your approach. Be open and truthful. There’s nothing worse than attempting reconciliation when one person still holds secrets, doubts, or mistrust. Lingering doubts can lead to ongoing distrust until trust is restored. Rebuilding trust takes time—not just minutes, hours, or days, but often weeks or even months, sometimes much longer.
